A fistula is an abnormal connection or passage that forms between two organs or vessels that are not normally connected. This can have several causes, such as infection, injury, or inflammation. A common form is anal fistula, which usually develops from an infected anal gland that forms a tunnel-like tract between the inside of the anus or rectum and the skin around the anus. Symptoms of a fistula may include persistent pain, swelling, discharge of pus or stool from the opening near the anus, and recurrent infections. Treatment of fistulas depends on their location, complexity, and underlying cause. In many cases, surgery is necessary to remove the fistula tract and promote healing.
Procedures may include opening and draining the fistula, removing the entire fistula tract, or using techniques such as applying a suture (a thread-like material used to gradually divide the fistula tract). Antibiotics may also be prescribed to control the infection. Treatment of a fistula requires careful monitoring and follow-up to prevent recurrences and complications. It is important to seek medical care immediately for proper diagnosis and treatment planning, as untreated fistulas can lead to chronic pain, infections, and other health problems.
