Liver-related disorders such as jaundice, liver abscess, and hepatitis are common yet often misunderstood conditions. As a gastroenterologist and liver specialist, I frequently encounter patients struggling with these ailments. Early diagnosis and proper treatment are crucial to prevent complications. In this blog, I’ll explain these conditions, their causes, symptoms, and the latest treatment approaches.
Jaundice is a yellow discoloration of the skin and eyes caused by excessive bilirubin (a bile pigment) in the blood. It indicates an underlying liver, gallbladder, or blood disorder.
Hepatitis (viral or alcoholic)
Gallstones or bile duct obstruction
Liver cirrhosis
Hemolytic anemia (excessive red blood cell breakdown)
Yellow skin & eyes
Dark urine
Pale stools
Fatigue & abdominal pain
Depends on the underlying cause (e.g., antiviral drugs for hepatitis, surgery for gallstones).
Phototherapy for newborns with jaundice.
Liver detox support with hydration and a healthy diet.
A pus-filled infection in the liver, usually caused by bacteria (pyogenic abscess) or parasites (amoebic abscess).
Bacterial infection (E. coli, Klebsiella) spreading from the gut.
Amoebic infection (Entamoeba histolytica from contaminated water/food).
Post-surgical complications or biliary infections.
High fever with chills
Right upper abdominal pain
Nausea, weight loss
Jaundice (in severe cases)
Antibiotics (for bacterial abscess) or antiparasitic drugs (for amoebic abscess).
Drainage procedure (USG/CT-guided) if the abscess is large.
Surgery (rarely needed if other treatments fail).
Hepatitis refers to liver inflammation, commonly caused by viruses (A, B, C, D, E), alcohol, or autoimmune diseases.
Hepatitis A & E – Food/water-borne (acute, usually self-limiting).
Hepatitis B & C – Blood/body fluid transmission (can become chronic).
Alcoholic hepatitis – Due to excessive alcohol intake.
Autoimmune hepatitis – Body’s immune system attacks the liver.
Fatigue, nausea, vomiting
Jaundice
Abdominal pain
Dark urine & clay-colored stools
Hepatitis A & E: Supportive care (hydration, rest).
Hepatitis B: Antiviral drugs (Tenofovir, Entecavir).
Hepatitis C: Direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) cure >95% cases.
Alcoholic hepatitis: Alcohol cessation, nutrition, steroids (if severe).
Autoimmune hepatitis: Immunosuppressants (Prednisone, Azathioprine).
✅ Get vaccinated (Hepatitis A & B vaccines available).
✅ Avoid alcohol & fatty foods to reduce liver strain.
✅ Practice safe hygiene (clean water, proper sanitation).
✅ Get regular liver check-ups if at risk (diabetes, obesity, alcohol use).
Liver diseases like jaundice, abscess, and hepatitis can range from mild to life-threatening. Early medical intervention is key to preventing liver damage. If you or a loved one is experiencing symptoms, consult a liver specialist for accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment.
