Choledocholithiasis is the presence of at least one gallstone in the common bile duct. The stone may consist of bile pigments or salts of calcium and cholesterol. The liver produces bile, which helps digest fat. A long tube with a camera is inserted into the mouth, esophagus, stomach, and small intestine. The site where the common bile duct enters the small intestine is then identified and the stone is removed. This procedure is called endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography.
